The Pattern Book
/i//MVC-754S-3.jpg Available March 2005 in quilt shops, book stores, or order here on line.

There are nine quilts in the pattern book. Each quilt is from one of the nine main characters in the novel. As I
was working on the novel, I wanted to piece the quilts into the story pretty heavily. I had to make the quilts from
my own personal fabric stash so I could intertwine them into the story. These nine quilts I call "the rehearsal quilts"
because they were like the real quilts, but they weren't. The real quilts are the quilts from the "Leaving Riverton
Fabric Collection."

It was a real juggling act keeping all three of these endeavors going. The quilts from the "Leaving Riverton" fabric
collection were sewn together and completed by some of the "Square in a Square Certified Teachers" and also a
local club of mine called "Sisters of the Square in a Square Society." Click here to find out more about the "Square in a Square" system and see the website.

We are waiting for the fabric to arrive this fall.
We will create the nine quilts in two weeks or less so we can meet the deadline for printing the pattern book to be ready for fall International Market and Festival in Houston, which runs Oct 28th thru Nov 1 and Nov 4 thru Nov 7, respectively.

These traditional quilts are easily constructed by using the Square in a Square technique. Numerous triangle units we call Options are included. See how easy it is to create these gorgeous designs without ever cutting or sewing a triangle unit. Anyone can start learning this amazing system with this book and these quilts.

You also will enjoy the Mailly family from the novel and the "Leaving Riverton" fabric collection. Click here to read 2 chapters from the "Leaving Riverton" novel.

Megan’s Feathered Star

Megan is a grown woman in her mid twenties. She is Liz’s baby sister and best friend. Megan has a zest for life and is always reaching for an adventure. She wants her sister to move forward in life and nudges her to do so.
Miss Mailly loves to sew garments or quilts. She is marvelous with her needle skills. The Feathered Star certainly didn’t scare her away. She is always ready to tackle most anything inside or outside her sewing room.
A treadle sewing machine is her prize possession and it is packed in her wagon first. The western frontier will be easier to bear with it by her side. It may not be Paris, but Megan plans to have the best-dressed ladies around in her new home in Fort Worth, Texas!
Author’s Note: A special thank you to Kay Roberts for piecing and Kathy Kuryla for quilting. Both are talented artists from Tennessee.

Quilt Introduction

Megan’s Feathered Star is a quilt design that only a master piecer would try to complete. Even with our modern advances in quilt making, this is a scary pattern for most seamstresses. The time issue and triangle stress would make the majority of us admire this beauty in another sewing room and not in your own.
The Option 4™ of the Square in a Square® systems allows this quilt to be a reality for anyone. The system offers the speed and accuracy you need to tackle a project like this. It still will take some time to piece together, but it is now very achievable. So have a ball creating your masterpiece!
To make the reading and understanding of this design simple, we decided to write the large feathered star instructions first and to write it for one star. We made each feathered star a different color. So you just need to multiply the amounts by the number of stars you are making in that color. Our “rehearsal quilt” was constructed with a different smaller star in the center. We will give you fat quarter amounts for the color of the small star. The background will be included in the Feathered Star background amounts. Each star had a different background color that was consistent in the block.

Southern Skies
67” x 79” Advanced

Southern Skies is Grandpa Lucas’s quilt. He is proud of his family and is wise about the world. He is
determined to leave the world a better place and stay on top of the issues of the day. His favorite
place is the porch under the stars with nature and his pipe.
The geese flying North and South always intrigued him. How they knew when and where to go was always amazing.

They fly in a formation that helps the group move quickly and helps each other with the endurance required for a cross
country trip. The lead or front bird does all the work, by breaking the wind. As you work your way back in the V formation, it gets easier and less work for the bird. When the lead bird tires he goes back to the back to rest and just coasts along.

The noise we always hear are the birds encouraging the lead birds, telling them what a great job they are doing and to keep
going. When one is sick or injured and has to stay behind, a few always stay behind with him. When a new group fly over,
they are always welcome to join up again. We should all take a lesson from these geese.

Setting on the porch each evening as the large stars in the Southern Sky twinkles, Lucas can solve the problems of the world.
He has thought of a way to save his family, his money and his dream. Watch an old man leave a legacy behind.

Increase your sewing skills with this quilt. You will learn strip piecing, chain sewing and pressing. The Square in a Square® technique, Option 3™ Flying geese, Option 5™ and the new Option 18™ diamond Canadian geese with long thin triangles.

We will learn the basic sewing of the systems with squares and diamonds. See how easy this once difficult design can be using this amazing technique.

Liz’s Gift
64" x 76" Advanced

At the age of 6, Elizabeth Mailly and her baby sister Megan came to the Riverton Timber Mill to live with their grandparents.

Lucas and Claire were excited to have the your girls. The sudden death of their daughter Victoria and her husband John was a tragic blow to all of them.

The young girls grew up into beautiful women under their grandparents care. They were independent, educated and had a strong sense of family values. “Always be a lady, but never give up” was what Grandmother Claire taught.

Liz is now a grown woman with a young son Luke. She cares for her family and takes on the adventure of a lifetime. This beautiful Wreath Quilt is made for Liz and given to her as a very special gift. Can she accept the gift in the spirit in which it is given?

…about the quilt…
The Wreath Quilt, Liz’s Gift, is an ageless beauty. It would be a quilt for a very experienced piecer and most likely expect to be pieced by hand. Several colors of wreaths with a simple background fabric make this a simple color combo.

The pattern fabric amounts are given in wreath block form. That way, you can see what it takes to make one wreath and just increase it for the size of quilt you are making. Plus, it allows you to put in numerous colors into the wreath. It is a great scrap quilt. Sew each wreath a different fabric and color. Sew in dark prints or soft pastels. Go ahead and try the crown-pieced border. It sews together quickly.

The Square in a Square® system makes it so accurate and quick to make. You will learn Option 3™ and Option 18™ in this 12-inch block.

Reach the complete cutting and sewing instructions before you start. This block requires some unusual sizes. I think it is easier to cut some of these units larger and trim to fit. Especially when they are solid units and I am working with 71 pieces. This w3ill give your room to square up your block beautifully. As you go along, I have given you “square up” measurements. This is a 12-inch sewn and/or 12 ½ inch cut block.

Caleb’s Choice

Beginner 86” x 106”

Caleb was an incredible man who was loved and respected by everyone for miles around. As a young man, he came to Lecompet, Louisiana with his best friend Thomas. Lucas Mailey, the old man who owned the Riverton Timber Mill has raised two beautiful granddaughters. He offered Caleb and Thomas jobs at the mill. They worked hard, learned quickly and Caleb fell in love and married the oldest granddaughter, Liz. Caleb and Thomas ran the mill until one rainy day in May, 1856. That day changed everything, and for everyone. Liz, now a widow, just wanted to stay wrapped in the double Irish chain quilt that she was working on when she received the bad news. The green, tan and red were her favorite colors. Caleb loved the way a quilt would chain together and said it was good luck. It brings the true love home, he said. But, Liz’s true love wasn’t coming home. He never saw the quilt as she was working on it for their 13th wedding anniversary. How could she find her way without him? How could she find the strength to care for her family and start a different life? She couldn’t……..”Caleb will find his way home,” she thought. Or would he?

The double Irish chain, Caleb’s Choice, is known for its good luck. Green is used for luck and prosperity, red is for your true love and tan or beige is for good health and a long life, and was traditionally, given as a gift on the 13th birthday or wedding anniversary. Of course, not to be seen before the special day or you would break the chain of good luck.

Granny’s Garden

54" x 54"Beginner

Granny Claire was married to Lucas Mailly in our novel “Leaving Riverton.” She was a wonderful southern lady full of charm and a stickler with manners. Her daughter and granddaughters were in Southern etiquitte. “Always be a lady” was what she taught them to be. Life wasn’t easy and we had to be strong and perservere in the bad times. She was full of sayings that she passed on to Elizabeth. Here favorite was “Life gives us the daily opportunity to sew what we are made of.” How we act when times are hard will show the real you. Granny Claire worked her worries out in her garden alone in prayer. Her husband Lucas called it her prayer garden and it bloomed the prettiest when they lost their only son in his youth and later when Liz and Megan’s parents passed on. Granny Claire had talents for cooking, canning and appliqué too, Her simple garden flowers are gorgeous in any color palette. Enjoy working in Grannys’ Garden Flowers.

This quilt was co designed by Jodi Barrows and Alice Wilhoit.
