How the fabric came to be...
Quilt making was birthed by "making do." Little pieces of fabric were salvaged from all areas of life to piece a quilt. Many quilts were completed by never repeating the same of piece of cloth twice. I believe that the most beautiful quilts have multiple pieces of fabrics in them. Most people would call these scrap quilts. I call them "Organized" or "Structured, multi-fabric Quilts." I also believe that many quilters struggle with putting the fabric, colors and textures together for a quilt whether it has just 3 fabrics or 21.
If quilts are over-matched, they loose their spark. They need a good contrast or reaction between the fabrics.
Not only do quilters struggle with color selection for a normal quilt, they really stress out over a scrap quilt.
To build a scrap quilt, you need to divide your fabric into lights, mediums and darks. Sometimes the fabric reacts differently when placed next to a specific color. The texture or design of the cloth is important also. Use all of the different types such as flowers, (large or small), geometric prints, plaids, checks, stars, overlays and little prints of all types. What ever color you decide to be your sashings or border will become the focus color of the quilt. When building a beautiful organized, multi-fabric quilt, you must use several values of the same color as well as considering the texture and color contrast.
The women of the past created beautiful, multi-fabric quilts, and I want to help you do the same.
The "Leaving Riverton" fabric collection is a scrap bag collection (multi-fabric quilt). Any of the fabrics will blend and grow together to create a wonderful scrap quilt of your very own!! This collection of cloth will help give you confidence in building your authentic antique heirlooms.
When I was researching fabric companies, I was looking for steadfast dye and a nice, soft touch. I also wanted a company that would work around the problems in the fabric world and approach it differently than before. I found that in the Australian based company, Sullivans USA.
Having the fabric ready to ship quickly and timed quickly to arrive in your hands as the books are completed is a monstrous task. It is frustrating for a quilter to see the fabric in a book and then not have it available to purchase. We have worked hard to have all three completed in relatively the same time. We hope you enjoy this collection and the women of Riverton.
